まさしく、once in a lifetimeでしょう。要点をあちこち散らばっているウェブから集めてみました。
To mark 60 years of the Queen's reign the Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012. The celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.
60 years of the Queen's reign
The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897.
Buckingham Palace will be co-ordinating a programme of events centred around the extended weekend. This will include a Big Jubilee Lunch, a Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames, a concert at Buckingham Palace and the lighting of 2012 beacons throughout the United Kingdom. The Queen and other members of the Royal Family will also attend a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.
As part of the celebrations, towns in the UK will also compete for city status and existing cities will compete for Lord Mayoralty (or Lord Provostship in Scotland). These will be granted by The Queen in Her Jubilee year. Local authorities have been invited to apply and the results will be announced in the first half of 2012.
In London, Greenwich will be granted Royal Borough status in recognition of the historically close links between Greenwich and the monarchy. Like city status, Lord Mayoralty or Lord Provostship, this is a purely honorific award and confers no additional powers, functions or funding.
There will be a special bank holiday for the Diamond Jubilee. The 2012 late May bank holiday will be moved to Monday 4 June 2012 and an additional Jubilee bank holiday will be on Tuesday 5 June 2012. The extra bank holiday and extended bank holiday weekend will also apply to Scotland.
Schools in England and Wales will be able to close on Tuesday 5 June 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. If a school is already closed on 5 June for half term or another reason, it will be able to close on an alternative day. Scotland and Northern Ireland will be making their own arrangements.
Diamond Jubilee Emblem
The Jubilee emblem was chosen after a national competition for children aged between 6 and 14. The winning design is 10-year-old Katherine Dewar, from Chester.
It is free to download and will be available for use for all activities associated with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations including community and national events, publications, retail and merchandising. It is available from the British Monarchy website, together with guidelines for use.
The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant
At high water in the afternoon of Sunday 3 June 2012, up to a thousand boats muster on the River Thames in preparation for Her Majesty The Queen to lead the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. It will be one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the river. Rowed boats and working boats and pleasure vessels of all shapes and sizes will be beautifully dressed with streamers and Union Jacks, their crews and passengers turned out in their finest rigs. The armed forces, fire, police, rescue and other services are all afloat and there are an exuberance of historic boats, wooden launches, steam vessels and other boats of note.
The flotilla is bolstered with passenger boats carrying up to thirty thousand flag-waving members of the public placed centre stage (or rather mid-river) in this floating celebration of Her Majesty's sixty year reign. The spectacle is further enhanced with music barges, boats spouting geysers and pyrotechnic barges spitting smoke and daytime fireworks. And there will be specially constructed elements like a floating belfry, its chiming bells answered by those from riverbank churches.
The opening ceremony of London's Olympic Games is just six weeks away and the public that crowd the riverbanks and bridges gives a rousing reception to the many boats that have travelled from far and wide to represent UK port cities, the Commonwealth countries and other international interests. Downriver of London Bridge, there is a gun salute and the flotilla passes through a spectacular avenue of sail made by traditional Thames sailing boats, oyster smacks, square riggers, naval vessels and other impressive ships.
The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant celebrates Her Majesty's sixty years of service by magnificently bringing the Thames to life; making it joyously full with boats, resounding with clanging bells, tooting horns and sounding whistles; recalling both its royal heritage and its heyday as a working, bustling river.
Big Jubilee Lunch Sunday 3rd June 2012
As you may already know, next year’s Big Lunch will fall on the same weekend as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. So anyone who would like to celebrate and commemorate the Queen’s 60 year reign can do so by holding a Big Lunch!
A special 4-day Jubilee bank holiday has been announced to mark the occasion so there will be plenty of time for you to enjoy lunching in your community over the long weekend – Saturday 2nd – Tuesday 5th June.
We are delighted that The Big Lunch has been asked to be part of a weekend that promises to be a momentous occasion.
Some 10 million people came out in sunny 1977 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee so we hope a large number of people will take part in The Big Lunch for the first time in 2012 - joining the well over a million of us that have been doing it for the last 3 years!
The beauty of The Big Lunch is that people themselves decide everything about their own event. The venue can be wherever you want or have space, the theme whatever you fancy - food and people are the key ingredients. For example, if you want to raise money for charity do it, if you want to play music feel free (just so long as other neighbours are happy!). You can close your road if you fancy a big street party or use a local park for a small community BBQ - it really is up to you.
The Big Lunch team will be here with help you along the way in planning your event. If you have any questions or queries please get in touch via firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0845 850 8181 to speak to one of the team .
Quite simply we want to get as many people as possible to sit down and have lunch with their neighbours on the first Sunday in June.
After all The Big Lunch is all about community, friendship and fun!
