Time Out magazine to be free in London from autumn

The London edition of Time Out magazine is to be relaunched as a free title following a sustained decline in sales.

More than 300,000 copies of the weekly listings guide will be given away in the capital from this autumn, replacing the current paid-for edition.

Foreign editions - available in such cities as Paris and New York - will remain as paid-for publications.

Time Out was founded in 1968 and sold more than 110,000 copies a week during the 1990s, its most successful period.

Its current circulation is around half that, with the majority of sales coming through subscriptions.

The free edition, available on Tuesday, will be handed out in train stations, museums, bars and shops.

Subscribers will receive the publication free but will be charged a fee to cover the cost of postage.

Time Out goes free: London edition of listings magazine to drop cover price

1. Why is Time Out becoming a free magazine?

Time Out has been helping Londoners make the most of the city for more than 40 years. In this time the market has changed, and people access their information, reviews and recommendations in radically new and different ways. We believe the changes we’re making to the magazine will help us remain relevant to more people than ever for many years to come.

The new magazine will be fully integrated into the large existing portfolio of Time Out products. Also, we feel we cannot continue to charge for a magazine when the rest of our editorial and listings – on the website, iPad, iPhone and Android apps, and email newsletters – are all free.

By making the magazine free, we will be able to share Time Out’s knowledge and expertise with more people than we ever have, and we hope it will inspire millions more Londoners to enjoy the best that the capital has to offer.

Digital-only Financial Times would still be a difficult trick to perform
