As you may have heard, as part of the National Infrastructure Plan’s announcement today the government confirmed funding for the Culture and Education Quarter at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, which our 600-seat theatre for contemporary dance is to be a part of.

We are delighted that the ‘Olympicopolis’ project has received this major support from the government. Our new, mid-scale space represents an essential development for the future of dance in the UK. It is a unique opportunity for us to establish a venue specifically designed to serve contemporary dance-makers and our growing audiences. It will allow us to attract leading choreographers creating work for the mid-scale; to expand the range of shows we can present, produce and tour; and to offer a different and more intimate experience for the public and bespoke facilities for artists. We will also be able to increase the number of artists we collaborate with and the number of people we engage in dance by nurturing new talent and tapping into the vibrant community living and working in the area. Our space will provide a creative hub for innovation and experimentation.

The development will be at the core of the fastest growing neighbourhoods in London and we are excited by the prospect of playing a part in the ambitious regeneration programme planned for Stratford by the Mayor of London and the London Legacy Development Corporation. Our aim is to act as a catalyst for creativity in the area and foster projects involving local schools, arts organisations including East London Dance, Stratford Circus and Theatre Royal Stratford East, and our neighbours on site. The latter include the Victoria and Albert Museum and the University of the Arts - with whom we will share the Stratford Waterfront site, University College London (UCL), who will build a new campus nearby, and Wayne McGregor l Random Dance, who will have a base and dance studios within a short walk from the Culture and Education Quarter.

Placing contemporary dance at the heart of what will be a new global cultural district will cement London’s position as the world’s greatest centre for dance and further enhance its status as a worldwide centre for creativity and cutting-edge collaborations among different art forms, design, science and technology. An international design competition for the scheme, which has attracted interest from architectural practices all over the world, closed at the end of last month. The design team selected to work on the project is likely to be announced in May 2015 and I will keep you updated as things develop.

I hope you will share our excitement at today’s good news. Thank you for your enthusiastic and continued support of Sadler’s Wells; we wouldn’t have got this far without you. Our bold vision for dance is, step-by-step, getting closer to being realised. I, and the whole Sadler’s Wells’ team, look forward to sharing this exciting journey with you over the next few years.

2012 Olympic site to become hub for arts with £141m boost from Treasury
