師走の話題：サヴォイ・ホテル閉鎖、他

ロンドンの冬で、特に嫌いな現象が二つあります。一つは、言わずもがな、この世が終わっても降り続いているような雨。二つ目は、いつもではないですが、一日の最高気温と最低気温がほぼ同じというとき。例え冬でも、温度差がないと普通以上に寒く感じます。
日本は政治的混乱、社会的混乱が続いていて、昨日起きた事件は明日には忘れてしまうほど別の大きな事件が毎日起きているように感じています。イギリスも同じです。あれほどメディアを賑わせたカヌーで失踪、死亡を偽装した夫婦の事件は既に新聞の片隅に追いやられています。例えば明日、ある大企業がいきなり倒産しても、恐らく驚かないかもしれません。そういえば、稀代の詭弁家首相を引き継いでしまった為に政治的窮地にはまり込んでしまったゴードン・ブラウン首相には、福田首相の姿が重なります。
でも、気分が沈むニュースの次には笑いを誘われる事柄もあるわけで、ここ数日見つけたちょっとしたニュースを幾つか。
一つ目は、時節柄、クリスマス関連。ある調査で、特に若い世代のイギリス人が、イエス・キリストがどこで生まれたかを知らなかったと。クリスマスを商業イヴェントにしてしまったつけと言ってしまえばそれまでですが、アングリカン・チャーチは一応、キリスト教の一派であるわけですから、ちょっとこれは拙いのではないかと思います。

4. Where did Joseph, Mary and Jesus go to escape from King Herod when Jesus was a young child?
22 per cent correctly said Egypt. Of the 78 per cent who were wrong, 52 per cent said Nazareth, five per cent said Babylon and one per cent said Rome.
僕も、これはローマだとばかり思っていました。でも、最初の質問でベツレヘムと答え、ベツレヘムがどこにあるかをきちんと理解していれば、答えはローマのはずもなく。地図を思い浮かべれば、イスラエルはエジプトからはそう遠くないわけで。乳飲み子を抱えてなら、ローマよりエジプトのほうが現実的です。ちなみに、エジプト人の知人（イスラム教徒）に、このエジプトへの逃避行は一般常識なのか尋ねたところ、「当然だ。イギリス人がこのことを知らないなんて、恥と知るべきだ」、と鼻で笑っていました。
ロンドンのテムズ川沿い、ストランドに１８８９年に開業して以来営業を続けてきたサヴォイ・ホテルが、改築のために今日、１２月１５日に、その扉を閉めました。

予定では、最短１６ヶ月の閉鎖とのことですが、まるまる２年くらい掛かるのではないかと思います。サヴォイ・ホテルには一度しか足を踏み入れたことがないので、思い入れなんて何もないですけど、アフタヌーン・ティーはもう一度くらいは味わいたかったな。
次。これはイギリス人がしでかした失敗ではないですが。イギリスのノーフォークにあるクィーン・エリザベス・ホスピタルと、オーストラリアのアデレイドにあるクィーン・エリザベス・ホスピタルから、それぞれ別の医療用スキャナーを受注したオランダのメーカー、フィリップスが発送先を間違えたそうです。

イギリス国内の別の病院に、というのであれば僕がここで書くなんてことはなかったでしょう。でも、北半球と南半球を間違えるというのは、どのような思考プロセスを経て生み出された失敗なのか、間違えた本人に尋ねてみたいです。
最後は、これもどこの国でも似たようなことが起きているんでしょうけど。イギリス人の親は、自分たちの子供達には、できれば地方の話し方をして欲しくない。代わりに、子供達の将来のためにクィーンズ・イングリッシュを身につけて欲しいとの調査結果。実はこのニュース、ロンドンの夕刊紙、The Evening Standard紙の小さな囲み記事だったので、リンクは見つからないと思ったら、それこそ結構訛のあるランカシャーとヨークシャーの地方新聞紙で見つけました。リンクは、Yorkshire Evening Postからです。いつまでリンクが有効なのか全くわかりませんので、本文も張っておきます。

Parents discourage local accents
More than half of British parents discourage their children from speaking with their local accent for fear of harming their life chances, according to a survey.
The research showed 51% actively discouraged their youngsters from using an accent while 33% encouraged them to speak "the Queen's English".
The firm Combined Insurance asked a sample of more than 2,300 parents about the importance of keeping local accents and how this impacts on the community.
The respondents were asked whether they would encourage their children to speak with their region's local accent and what impact they thought this would have on their child's future.
They also indicated which accent they would most like their child to speak with.
One in five (20%) parents were worried their children might find it harder to get a well-paid job if they spoke in their local accent and more than one in six (17%) thought their child would be perceived to have a lower level of intelligence.
Almost one in 10 (8%) feared local accents would mean they would not be taken seriously in life.
Among the regional findings of the survey were that 27% of parents living in the West Country were worried their child might be teased and bullied in their future job for having a local accent and 26% thought their child might be considered to be not very bright.
And 14% of parents living in the Midlands believe their child might not be taken seriously in life because of their accent.
Across the UK, the Birmingham accent was the one parents would least like their child to use. In Birmingham, only 8% of parents said they would encourage their children to use the local accent.
一番人気のないバーミンガムの話し方、僕は結構好きです。まるで歌っているような喋り方で、いいと思うんですけどね。でもある方から聞きました。バーミンガム方言は、間が抜けていると思われがちなんだそうです。また、スコットランド出身、第二次世界大戦中は、ヨークシャーで疎開生活を送っていたご高齢の友人ですら、「Such a terrible English」と決め付けていたので、人気がないというのは間違っていないようです。訛のきつい方言だと、外国人の僕にとってはコミュニケイションはとても難しいものになります。でも話し方一つも、その人の歴史なわけですから、恥じ入るべきものではないと思います。
